Artist Bio

Fan Xia is a Chinese artist based in Winnipeg. His practice explores the relationship between materiality, space and memory, examining how things exist within states of neglect and transformation. Through photography and multimedia processes, he reveals the emotional and perceptual layers embedded within urban and nature environments. By reconstructing spatial relationships, He redefines modes of seeing—connecting the visible and the invisible, the present and the vanishing—and invites viewers to shift from passive observation to active exploration. His work demonstrates a sustained inquiry into the notion of “circumstance.” Forgotten places, residual traces, and objects suspended between reality and illusion become entry points for his contemplation of fragility and continuity in existence. Through experimentation with materials and the reconstruction of images, Fan seeks to capture the silent flow of time and to construct contemporary narratives of perception, memory, and belonging. He is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree at the School of Art, University of Manitoba.
